Considered considerably less than average in height on their home planet, the affectionately dubbed 'little monsters' grew tired of the constant jibes and fled to the nearest inhabitable planet: Earth. There they lived happily ever after, causing havoc as only giant alien monsters can. They currently reside in New York City.

The Pano Device is like a computer with nothing inside it. You plug your monitor, keyboard and mouse into the back, but it contains no CPU, no memory, and no software; all of that stuff resides on a Pano Manager server, which hosts the OS and virtualizes it to the Pano Device.
So what's inside the thing? Damned if I know, I think if you dropped it and it shattered there'd be little leprechaun bodies all over your floor. But the bottom line is this two-inch tall device is projected to cut business computing costs by 70%; "compared to a PC it consumes 3% of the energy, uses 4% of the material to make it, and is one hundred times smaller."
Designed by ID consultancy Whipsaw, the Pano Device has won a 2010 Green Good Design Award, which is conferred by the Chicago Athenaeum Museum of Architecture and Design and The European Centre for Architecture Art Design and Urban Studies. (Sadly, the Good Design website was not working properly at press time so no direct link is available.)

The Citrange by Quentin de Coster is a nicely functional (and pretty!) fruit juicer. Its two ends are sized differently to accommodate the various diameters of citrus fruits. The juice is funneled down through the center of the Citrange (which also filters the seeds) and into your waiting glass!

The fly-shaped Lytta by Mano de Santo is much more than a simple swing-out table. Two leaves pull out to provide more surfaces to use as a table- or desktop, while two stools are untucked from underneath the table.

Red Wii (Image courtesy Kotaku)
By Andrew Liszewski
Nintendo continue its celebrations of Super Mario Bros. 25th anniversary with this Japan-only (for the time being at least) 'Mario red' Wii console that also includes one of their new all-in-one motion plus Wiimotes.

Of course the blinding red hue of this Wii console isn't that exciting to be honest, but what it comes with is. The Mario edition Wiis will include a pre-installed special copy of Super Mario Bros. on the Virtual Console where all of the coin blocks now bear the number 25 instead of a question mark. They'll go on sale on November 11 in Japan for ~$240 (¥20,000) and I'm going to assume will be available in limited quantities.

The late Julius Shulman's photographic influence on modern architecture has helped shape the architectural mindset of entire generations of existing and up and coming architects.  His iconic architectural photographs have given the world a glimpse into California's Mid-century modern architecture movement that started in the 1950's and still inspire architects and designers today.

Visual Acoustics: The Modernism of Julius Shulman gives viewers a chance to get a candid look into the life of Julius Shulman and his amazing photographic career.  It is narrated by Dustin Hoffman and directed by Eric Bricker.  The film has received multiple awards and great reviews and is a must see for all designers and photographers.  Anyone who enjoys modern homes and design will greatly appreciate this movie.

If you subscribe to Netflix, the documentary is available on DVD and streaming.

The future iPhone is here or at least in conceptual form. Given that size, design and features need to be drastically innovated, the NOT A Phone – Next Generation iPhone, delves into the projection arena. So basically you strap the next-gen iPhone to your wrist and project the display to your palm. You can figure out rest of the drill from the images, so my question to you today is….are we in for projection screens for phones? Is that the future of phone display, have a basic small screen and project the rest of it?

The Citrange is a hand squeezer for the citrus fruits in your life. The unique funnel design makes it feel that the juice is going to spill out of the glass; but it does not. The double-grooves design allows you to squeeze the wide (like an orange) to the narrow (like a lime) fruit from either ends of the juicer. I like the fact that a strainer is built-in and the overall procedure cuts back one whole step in juice-squeezing. Ok, I love it!

The purpose of the Mohock Smart Umbrella is to get rid of disposable bags for carrying wet umbrellas and making sure you don't lose them. The first achieved with a handle redesign, where it's thick and wide enough to take in the dripping water by placing the umbrella upright. And to ensure that you don't forget it anywhere, a unique top attachment has been crafted, so that you can hang it off a table. Love the attractive colors that it comes in, plus the three-fold and two-fold options. One question Mr. Designer….when can I buy one?
  • The handle functions as a water catcher. This prevents dripping, eliminating the need for disposable bags.
  • Users can always hang it close by, reducing the chance of losing them.
  • It can be hung at the edge of a table or on a hook.
  • It is similar to a standard 3 – folding umbrella in size, but the large handle ensures a stable grip.
  • The water collected inside the handle will evaporate over time, or it can be dumped after use.

'sand.stone.road' by thomas kosbau + andrew wetzler

'sand.stone.road' by thomas kosbau and andrew wetzler from the usa is the grand prize winning entry
of 'iida awards 2010', organized by designboom in collaboration with incheon metropolitan city.

recognizing the need for a healthier alternative to asphalt, the project proposes a biologically treated
and processed paving material that uses a common microbe to alter the properties and behavior
of loose grains of sand into stabilized sandstone.

designer's own words:
'the world is suffering from a material found outside of every doorway. asphalt has been used as
the conventional paving material for the last 80 years. extremely toxic chemicals are released in
its production, installation, and are off-gassed throughout its lifetime. asphalt greatly contributes
to the urban heat island effect, reaching peak temperatures of 48-67 degrees celsius. at current
consumption levels, approximately 28,000,000 barrels of crude oil were required to create
south korea's 86,990 km roadway system. this is roughly 5 times the amount of oil released into
the gulf of mexico. our project proposes the use of an organic process to create sandstone from sand
as an alternate paving surface, thereby mitigating the harmful effects of asphalt.'

Herman Miller SAYL Chair (Images courtesy Herman Miller)
By Andrew Liszewski
Herman Miller continues their dominance of office ergonomics with their new SAYL chair designed by Yves Béhar, who if you're not familiar, also designed the Jawbone BT headset and the first generation OLPC. Inspired by San Francisco's Golden Gate Bride, the frameless back of the SAYL features a Y-tower structure that supports a stretched flexible elastomer material (like the cables on a suspension bridge) allowing it to contour to anyone's shape, while still providing support and keeping users cool and comfortable.
On the eco front the chairs are made from 21% recycled content materials, and it itself is 93% recyclable. I can't seem to dig up pricing info at the moment though, and even though Herman Miller claims it will have a "very attainable price" let's assume that's relative to their other premium seating options.

status crap website
We're all guilty of it: banal, bland, and bizarre status updates on Twitter and (bite our tongues) Facebook. Well, Status Crap has had enough (or not enough, as the case may be). This endlessly entertaining website streams 'stupid and ridiculous Facebook and Twitter status updates. It's too much fun!' We tend to agree.
