DESIGN 21 ANNOUNCES IMPRESSIVE LINEUP OF JUDGES FOR WOOD, PAPER,
CHECKMARK & LANGUAGES MATTER! COMPETITIONS Picks Include ICOGRADA
Executives and Internationally Known Design Professionals

DESIGN 21's latest offerings of social design competitions are
still open for submissions until mid-January. Hoping to utilize the
remarkable creativity of its global base of designers while harnessing
the power of design for the greater good, DESIGN 21: Social Design
Network - an online platform founded by Felissimo and UNESCO to inspire
and promote design for the greater good - is pleased to announce a
stellar line-up of industry leaders who will judge the two current
competitions.

WOOD, PAPER, CHECKMARK  Deadline: January 13, 2009

FSC-certified wood - produced using sustainable forestry practices
recognized by the Forest Stewardship Council - is vital to saving the
world's forests but remains an unfamiliar term to most consumers.
Recognizing the necessity of creating a communication campaign, DESIGN
21 developed the Wood, Paper, Checkmark Competition with
co-beneficiaries FSC-US and The Nature Conservancy to inform targeted
consumers about the FSC label. It asks for its international base of
15,000 members to create a call-to-action campaign including: a
compelling and persuasive message that drives people to a
consumer-searchable website; a design for online and print ads; and a
clever URL name for the FSC's consumer website.

The overall winner will be awarded $5,000 and will be chosen by the
following representatives of The Nature Conservancy and the FSC-US:
Michael Conroy, an economist, author and certification expert, who is
head of Colibrí Consulting - Certification for Sustainable Development,
and a member of the FSC-US board; Corey Brinkema, president of FSC-US;
Martha Hodgkins, senior advisor to The Nature Conservancy's Forest
Trade Program; and Matt Mattox, senior strategic planner of The Martin
Agency. In addition, DESIGN 21 will allocate another $5000 in prize
money to be shared by the winner of the Most Popular design, via an
online public voting poll, and four of DESIGN 21's Judge's Picks.
Jurors pulled from the Advisory Board are: Niti Bhan, strategic design
planning consultant and co-founder of the Emerging Futures Lab from
Singapore; Jennifer Leonard, design researcher, writer and strategist
at IDEO from Canada; David Carlson, brand consultant and founder of
David Design from Sweden; and Halim Chouiery, designer, educator, and
vice president of ICOGRADA (International Council of Graphic Design
Associations) from Lebanon.

LANGUAGES MATTER! Deadline: January 19, 2009

About every two weeks another language dies, taking with it an
unwritten account of history and culture. In an effort to raise
awareness about the importance of multilingualism and save native
languages from extinction, DESIGN 21 created the Languages Matter!
Competition. Entrants are asked to design the official poster for
UNESCO that honors International Mother Language Day on February 21st,
2009.

The winning entry will be chosen by UNESCO judges: Daniel Prado, the
director of Terminology and Language Industries from Argentina and
Adama Samassékou, the secretary general of the African Academy of
Languages from Mali. First prize will receive $3,000 and an invitation
to attend Mother Language Day at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris. In
addition, two DESIGN 21 Advisory Board members will award $1000 each to
their individual favorites. Those judges are past ICOGRADA President,
Jacques Lange, who is also the partner and creative director of
Bluprint Design in South Africa, and Omar Vulpinari from the Republic
of San Marino who is the current vice president of ICOGRADA and the
creative director of the Visual Communication Department at Fabrica.
All entries will be posted online for a public voting poll, awarding
$500 to the Most Popular design.
